The pycnopodia sighting brought “a bit of hope to a gloomy situation,” as diver Grant Downie said he’s been discouraged by low kelp numbers and not many viable red urchins.
NOAA’s public comment on the proposed listing of pycnopodia will remain open until May 15.
More than 300 people observed 11 species of sea star up and down the California coastline in December.
