UKIAH, CA., 10/9/26 — Palace Hotel owner Tom Carter came to the Ukiah City Council on Wednesday with a promise: a letter, in 10 to 14 days, saying the Palace Hotel is structurally sound. On a 5-0 vote, members put the 1891 hotel back on the Nov. 4 agenda, letter or no letter, with staff to bring options for what the city does next.

“I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know,” Mayor Susan Sher said of the question residents keep asking about what’s happening with the hotel, which the council declared a dangerous building and public nuisance in 2015. “It’s looked the same for about 35 years.” Later: “This is becoming a standing joke in our community … so I’ve just come to the point where I’ve given up, and I don’t really see any realistic possibility.”
