Dear Editor:
The Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show, September 18–20, is more than a beloved tradition. Since 1924, it has brought families, farmers, local businesses, and visitors together to celebrate Anderson Valley and Mendocino County.
But the fairgrounds are also something even more vital: a regional safe haven in emergencies. In a county vulnerable to wildfire, earthquakes, flooding, and evacuations, the Anderson Valley Fairgrounds provide a place for people, animals, and communities to turn when they need help most.
Today, rising costs and declining state support have left rural fairgrounds struggling with deferred maintenance and growing needs. Without sustained funding, this essential public resource will continue to decline.
Assemblymember Damon Connolly’s AB1711 would help correct the state funding formula so rural fairgrounds like ours receive the support they deserve. The bill has passed the Legislature and is now on Governor Newsom’s desk. Please take one minute to email the Governor at leg.unit@gov.ca.gov, attention: Governor Newsom, and urge him to sign AB1711. The deadline for messages is September 25.
This is our chance to protect a place that strengthens emergency preparedness, supports local businesses, and keeps community traditions alive for future generations.
