MENDOCINO CO., 10/20/25 — Expect possible smoky conditions surrounding Laytonville through Friday, as a prescribed burn at Shamrock Ranch will treat around 450 acres of woodland and mixed conifers.

Several burns were conducted at Shamrock, southeast of Laytonville, earlier this year. Cal Fire says the intent is to create islands of unburned habitat while controlling vegetation in burned areas.

Burning begins Monday, Oct. 20 and continues intermittently through Friday, Oct. 24. Burns start at around 8 a.m. daily, concluding at 3 p.m.

Cal Fire says the project adds to work underway to meet state fuel reduction goals. The burn will be conducted under strictly controlled weather, wind and fuel conditions. Aircraft and smoke may be visible from U.S. Highway 101 and around the area.
