MENDOCINO CO., 7/2/25 – Nothing is more synonymous with the Fourth of July than fireworks. And while fireworks might be a festive way to celebrate the holiday, fireworks are illegal in Mendocino County, with the exception of rare professional fireworks shows.
“The sale, transport, or use of fireworks without the ‘Office of the State Fire Marshal Safe and Sane’ seal is illegal,” Cal Fire said, “as is possessing or using any fireworks in communities where they are not allowed.”
In Mendocino County all fireworks – including ‘safe and sane’ fireworks – are illegal, the County Office of Emergency Services, or OES, said. This includes sparklers, skyrockets, bottle rockets, Roman candles, aerial shells, and firecrackers.
“As we approach the 4th of July holiday, please remember that we are now in fire season, and it is dry in all areas of the County,” the OES said, “The illegal use of fireworks poses a serious threat to the safety and well-being of everyone in our County.”
Even Gov. Gavin Newsom is chiming in regarding illegal fireworks this year.
“Our message is clear: illegal fireworks won’t be tolerated, and you will be prosecuted. They run the risk of starting dangerous fires in the peak of our fire season,” he said.
These warnings come as the county experienced its first Red Flag Warning on Monday due to thunderstorms, gusty winds and dry conditions.
Weather conditions are expected to be seasonal on Friday and Saturday, when most holiday festivities will take place, the National Weather Service said.
According to the OES, Cal Fire and local law enforcement agencies are working together to enforce a zero-tolerance policy regarding the use and sales of illegal fireworks.
The OES and Cal Fire recommend attending only professional fireworks shows. This year, firework shows will take place on July 5 in Point Arena, Ukiah and Fort Bragg.
