UPDATE 3:10 p.m. — Firefighters have made good progress in controlling and stopping the small fire that broke out along Hwy. 162 (a.k.a Covelo Rd. in that section). The Mendocino County Sheriffs Office briefly issued an mandatory evacuation order for people at mile marker 21.42 of Hwy. 162. But the order lasted only a few minutes and has since been rescinded, meaning the area is no longer under an evacuation order.
UPDATE 2:15 p.m. — The forward progress of the fire has been stopped and helicopters have been recalled. It seems as though they had some difficulty getting the copters to the Round Valley, and two copters could be seeing flying south over the Little Lake Valley at about 2:10 p.m. Also from scanner chatter, it seems that the dozers have successfully cut breaks to protect structures, but that several engines will remain in the area to fully contain and mop up the fire for the next few hours. CalFire is now cancelling various resources, one more good sign that the fire is under control.
MENDOCINO Co., 8/15/18 — A wildfire has broken out along Covelo Rd. near Covelo. The fire has grown to about five acres as of 2 p.m., and has spread from the grass into nearby brush.
The Covelo Fire Department and CalFire have responded, and CalFire has sent aircraft, though as of 2p.m. it was unclear if they had arrived.
Firefighters are making progress against the blaze and CalFire has ordered a substantial number of resources to respond to the fire.
A separate incident has occurred near Leggett with a box truck rolling over, and the Leggett Fire Department has responded to that, however it does not appear that that has caused any fire. They are also reporting only minor injuries from that accident.
We will continue to update.
