Water trucks have begun making their way from Ukiah to Fort Bragg, but they’re only transporting 10,000 gallons of water per day right now; that’s a lot less than the estimated 70,000 gallons per day needed to meet coastal demand.
“There’s no other alternative for folks on the coast,” said Sean White, Ukiah’s director of water and sewer. “Even though the situation over here is bad, the situation over there is dire. It’s not like we can just look the other way.”
At a special meeting Monday night, the Fort Bragg City Council unanimously approved the purchase of a $154,624 desalination system to treat shallow groundwater from Redwood Elementary School’s well.
“It was very fortunate that the mail carrier saw the fire and alerted the occupant as well as using extinguishers to control it,” Fort Bragg Fire Chief Steve Orsi wrote in an email Wednesday.
