UKIAH, CA., 5/24/25 — The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors approved flying the Pride flag at the administration office on Low Gap Road in Ukiah last week.

Supervisors Maureen Mulheren and John Haschak sponsored the proposal to fly the Pride flag at the administration office in recognition of June as Pride Month and to celebrate Mendocino County’s LGBTQ+ community.

“It’s important to recognize the diversity, and the strength in diversity, that we have in Mendocino County,” said Haschak in an interview. “We’re representing all the people of the county.”

Haschak said that while President Donald Trump’s administration has been fighting against diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives on a national scale, the local government wants to ensure that all people are equally represented here in Mendocino County.

“The federal government has been totally stripping away diversity, equity, and inclusion in our society,” Haschak added. “This is the county’s opportunity to show that we support diversity, equity, and inclusion.”

During the public comment period of last Tuesday’s board meeting, Kim Bancroft, a Willits resident and a teacher, editor, and writer, expressed just how crucial it is to represent the LGBTQ+ community of the county.

“For many varied reasons we exist. We are teachers, medical practitioners, builders … and maybe even supervisors in the past. We simply want to live in peace like everyone else,” Bancroft said. “This county to honor gay people in this way means that you are educating people around the country that you are not afraid to be our allies. You are bringing great pride to Mendocino County by flying the flag and acknowledging this history.”

The flag raising will take place at 9 a.m. at the Mendocino County Administration Center, 501 Low Gap Rd., Ukiah, on Monday, June 2.

  1. Separation of ideology from the state is as needed as much as separation of church and state.

  2. This is wrong why does the alphabet soup need to be recognized when it’s already been Shoved down our throats the past 4 years, the community does not need to recognize these people’s sexual preferences

  3. Nice that the flag is flying as it has for the last 40 years. It brings out all the homophobes. Yeah!
Why not focus on something more important for Mendocino County, like getting the budget right, cooperating with an elected official Cubbison, and getting rid of the true corrupt officials, D.A.Eyster and the current CEO?

  4. All you have to do is look at these comments and you know why suicide kills more young people 10-18 than childhood disease. Bigots would rather their own child be dead than queer.

  5. We should have pride in our accomplishments… I suppose some folks find taking it in the butt quite an accomplishment…either way, it’s a deadly sin. I think virtue should be a deadly sin as well… my gay friends find all of this very embarrassing and demeaning

    1. If you think virtue should be a deadly sin, you are not Christian. You are just a mean person. GOOD LUCK getting into heaven!

  6. As soon as the new Nazi government comes to power the creeps feel free to throw prejudice and bigotry around again. Personally I don’t care what anyone does in the bedroom or who they do it with but the new Nazi government wants everyone to be thinking about everybody else’s personal life. Great country we got here. Bunch of nosy Karen’s obsessed with everybody’s junk and what they’re doing with it. Make America Not Stupid Again.

    1. Abe not a nazi: no one was thinking about anyone’s personal life until they paraded it .. Literally .. there will be parades..

    2. Yeah sure Ab. That’s why cops used to arrest the gays for congregating in bars and businesses would fire them if they found out they were gay. Straight folks have pride parades every day- it’s called holding hands in public and kissing on the sidewalk. Look at who dominates the 4th of July parades and all the ads for beer leading up to it. It’s straight people. Put one alternative person with a Bud Light in hand and some people go nuts. Like I said, Nazis want to obsess over who’s doing what with whom, and you’re proving me right.

  7. The Flagpole fly’s The United Sates of America flag, the state of California flag. Both of these flags represent the people of California. This flag represents what people do in their bedroom, perversion, fornication, abomination. To fly this flag over the 99% opposed to pornography is an insult to the entire community. Flags are not about sexuality and imposing your disgusting lifestyle on others, they are a sign of unity you just destroyed by your 1% of perverts.
