UKIAH, CA., 9/27/26 — The Mendocino College Agriculture Department will hold its fall plant sale Friday, Oct. 2, and Saturday, Oct. 3, in the college gardens on the Ukiah campus, according to the college’s event listing.
“Fall is the very best time to plant perennials and California natives!” the listing says.
The department’s plant list for the sale runs 10 pages. It’s sorted into desert plants, California natives, hardy perennials, edible perennials and herbs, house plants, succulents, and fall vegetables.
The native section includes blue oak, valley oak, toyon, western redbud, scarlet monkeyflower and hummingbird sage.
The fall vegetables lean on the cabbage family: broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kale. There are 14 kinds of lettuce, among them Little Gem, Winter Density and one called Drunken Woman.
The edibles table has fruit, too. It lists a dwarf peach, a kumquat, goji berry, mulberry, a thornless blackberry and seven grapes, including zinfandel, grenache and chardonnay.
In the desert section are agaves, prickly pear, yuccas and a cholla called teddybear cactus.
The college’s Horticulture Club planted succulent bowls for the sale, according to the department’s webpage. Other college clubs, including the Ceramics Club, will sell their products.
On Saturday only, the college’s annual surplus sale will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of the Red Barn. The college’s Facilities department runs the surplus sale, which offers campus property the college no longer uses. College surplus sales often include used office furniture, computers and equipment, but the college has not said what will be for sale this year.
Credit cards are now accepted. The department’s page says cash, check or charge all work.
The Agriculture Department offers an associate degree in horticulture and certificates in landscape practices, nursery production, sustainable small farms management and viticulture. Students train in the gardens and vineyards on campus.
The sale runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Mendocino College Gardens, 1000 Hensley Creek Road, Ukiah. The full plant list is posted on the Agriculture Department webpage. For information, call 707-468-3148.
