UKIAH, CA., 8/12/26 — Mendocino College has a new mural on display that was created by students in the college’s first mural-painting course, a college spokesperson announced Wednesday.
The finished mural features campus landmarks and symbols of learning, support, music, art and community as well as elements from the local environment like water, salmon, poppies and native wildlife.
According to the college, the course introduces students to mural painting through historical study and hands-on practice. Students study how murals have been used globally to communicate ideas and celebrate communities while learning how to collaborate in designing and creating public artwork, the college said.
To begin the mural-painting course project, students were asked what Mendocino College means to them and how they would visually express that. Collaboration led to several emerging themes such as encouragement, creative inspiration, personal growth and environmental stewardship, the college said.
The new 128-square-foot piece of art is on display in the Lowery Student Center near Schat’s Café at Mendocino College Ukiah Campus. To learn more about the college’s art department and see classes being offered, visit www.mendocino.edu.
Hi! The mural looks fabulous! As a Fort Bragg muralist and sign painter, I’m interested in your instructor(s). Is there a mural in Ukiah or elsewhere that was done by the instructor? How long was the course? Is there a job opportunity available at the end of the class? Do businesses contact the school for murals? Is the class only one hour/day and how many days/week? Just curious.. and what paint are you using? And brushes? Other tools?

Thanks for your comment! I created the class and co-taught it with my colleague Jazzminh Moore. We used Nova paints and regular artist brushes plus some rollers. The course was the full semester (17 weeks) and it was not linked to immediate job opportunities but some of the students plan to apply to mural calls. Perhaps in the future we will have businesses contacting us, but so far that hasn’t happened. This was our first time offering the class and we are still working a lot of it out.
