With all the fires, much appreciation to Cal Fire, local firefighters and Fire Safe councils who work long and hard now and in the off season to get us ready for these inevitable summer days. Just a reminder to please stay safe and be ready.
The proposal to improve road maintenance with a sales tax in unincorporated areas will not go to the voters in November. A 4/5 vote was needed. The majority voted in favor but that was not enough. Roads will be maintained with the funds available. Unfortunately, roads not maintained properly will deteriorate and cost more in the long run.
The board settled contract negotiations with three bargaining units with SEIU 1021 being the largest. Triggers were put in place, which means if certain revenue and expenditure conditions are met, then the cost-of-living adjustment increases for employees. This recognizes the county’s financial situation and gives employees increases if the finances improve.
Five additional Sheriff deputy positions and one sergeant position were approved. This is an additional $1 million cost. Certainly, safety is a priority and making sure that the Sheriff’s Office is properly staffed is necessary.
Mendocino Transit Authority celebrated its 50th birthday. They have dedicated staff such as Candy Lodge who has worked for MTA for 45 years and is still going strong. MTA provides vital transit services to our communities in a safe, clean and economical way. They try their best to get you where you need to be.
A moratorium on data center construction will come back to the Board on Sept. 1. The Board approved moving this issue forward and staff is working on the language. If adopted with the required 4/5 vote, an urgency ordinance such as this will take effect for 45 days and can be extended after a notice of public hearing.
