MENDOCINO CO., 12/31/25 – The California Highway Patrol will launch a New Year’s “holiday enforcement period” aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and promoting safe driving, the agency announced.
The enforcement period begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday and continues through Thursday night. During that time, CHP officers will increase patrols to ensure seat belts are worn, drivers are sober and speed limits are followed.
During last year’s New Year’s enforcement period, CHP reported 10 fatal crashes and arrested 481 people for driving under the influence.
CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee urged motorists not to drink and drive.
“Driving under the influence increases the risks on our roads, raises the chance of a crash, and puts lives in danger,” Duryee said. “We encourage everyone to do their part in keeping our roads safe by making responsible choices behind the wheel.”
During last week’s Christmas enforcement period, CHP officers arrested 297 people for driving under the influence, the agency said.
“Driving while under the influence, whether from alcohol, drugs or both, impairs judgment, decreases visibility and slows reaction times — key skills needed to drive safely,” CHP said.
CHP encourages motorists to designate a sober driver, use a taxi, ride-share service or public transportation, and report suspected drunk drivers by calling 911.
