WILLITS, CA., 9/10/26 — Those who love art, history and steam engines have a rare opportunity Saturday and Sunday. The Museum of Mendocino County is offering its fifth annual imPRESSED printmaking exhibit in concert with the Roots of. Motive Power Steam Festival.
The museum exhibit, open now through Sept. 27, contains a collection of prints from the Bruce Levene Collection. Levene came to Mendocino County in 1969 and quickly established the Mendocino Review, a local publication that highlighted local photography, writing and art. Along with his dedication to the arts, he was a pacesetter in preserving local history and forward-thinking enough to collect, preserve, and donate to the museum a large collection of posters advertising local events that connect the community through prints.
The museum will also feature a body of bright and bold new artworks from the progressive Art Explorers studio in Fort Bragg. The Art Explorers share not only their finished works, but their carved linoleum blocks that help viewers understand the printing process and inspire visitors to try their own hand at printmaking.
The printmaking exhibit goes hands-on for art and history enthusiasts at the 44th annual Roots of Motive Power Steam Festival Saturday and Sunday, combining steam engines, history and art. The beloved Kelly Springfield Steam Roller is fired-up as a print press and museum volunteers will assist the community with carving their own linoleum blocks for printing. Keeping with tradition, prints created at the festival will be incorporated into the exhibition and remain on display until ImPRESSED closes on Sept. 27.
