MENDOCINO CO., 10/6/25 — Few trees are more emblematic of Mendocino County’s rolling hills than the California oak. The county is home to more than half of the North Coast’s oak woodlands, and the University of California’s Hopland Research and Extension Center hosts 10 of the state’s 22 native species.

The center will showcase its oaks during California Oak Discovery Day on Saturday, Oct. 11. Activities include guided walks with authors Kate Marianchild (“Secrets of the Oak Woodlands”) and Robin Lee Carlson (“The Cold Canyon Fire Journals”), tours of research and restoration sites, oak haiku writing, informational booths and career talks on restoration and conservation.

Birds of the oak woodlands will also be highlighted, with a special art gallery featuring oak-themed works by Mendocino County artists.

A community picnic and a play, “And Who Shall Heal the Ground” by Diane Pepetone, will anchor the day. Attendees should bring their own lunches. The free, family-friendly event begins at 10 a.m. at the UC Hopland Research and Extension Center, 4070 University Road in Hopland. Registration is required, and some field sessions may fill up on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, visit bit.ly/oakday25.
