MENDOCINO CO., 10/29/25 – Work to replace the Elk Creek Bridge south of Elk is nearing completion, Caltrans announced Wednesday.
Construction on the new bridge began in August 2024. A temporary bridge carried drivers over the creek starting in September 2024, but it has since been removed, and traffic is now flowing across the newly installed structure.
According to Caltrans, the bridge — which carries California state Highway 1 over Elk Creek — was built in 1938 and “had reached the end of its service life.” The agency said the old bridge had several structural deficiencies and could have failed in a major collision, earthquake or other catastrophe.
The new bridge includes 12-foot lanes, 6-foot shoulders, and a 6-foot pedestrian and bicycle walkway on the west side.
The $13 million project is being completed by Granite Construction.
