UKIAH, CA., 10/15/25 — Curious about the history of Mendocino County and how to preserve local buildings and monuments? The city of Ukiah and the Historical Society of Mendocino County will hold a workshop Thursday at the Ukiah Valley Conference Center for community members to learn more about the process of historic preservation.

According to a press release from the city, the purpose of the workshop is to “engage with the community on recommendations for the drafting of the city’s historic preservation policy.”

The city and the historical society “will provide information of architectural and historic resources in Ukiah, facilitate questions and comments on the historic preservation process, and receive preliminary input on the city’s approach to the drafting of the city’s first-ever historic preservation ordinance,” the press release said.

According to Alyssa Ballard, the archivist and historian for the Historical Society of Mendocino County, the workshop gives the historical society a chance to collaborate with the community on ways to preserve important historic locations in Ukiah.

“We hope the community will attend this workshop to help inform the development of Ukiah’s first historic preservation policy,” Ballard said in an email. “The goal is to develop a meaningful historic preservation policy that protects Ukiah’s historic resources, now and into the future. It is important that the policy is tailored to Ukiah and its specific needs, which is why community participation is important.”

The workshop will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday at the Ukiah Valley Conference Center, 200 S. School St., in Ukiah.
