Dear Editor:
I am a Democrat. I have always regarded Republicans and the Republican Party (not always the same thing) as a respected set of colleagues and citizens, who obviously loved our country as I do, had respect for me and my party and an honorable view of the customs and practices that keep our democratic ship afloat.
Even though it now seems that the GOP has completely rejected any idea of bipartisan agreement, unless it includes complete capitulation of liberal values, I still wish for bipartisan compromise. I would like a balanced Legislature, with room for debate and compromise. A healthy democracy requires it.
The State legislature of Texas has passed, unilaterally, in a non-census year, and at the command of the current president, legislation that redistricts Texas and gifts the GOP with five replacement Republican seats in the House. This move will disenfranchise and remove representational power from thousands of Texas voters, mostly blacks and ethnically Hispanic.
California’s response to this is to propose legislation that would redistrict California and create five replacement Democratic seats.
This is a proportional response to an outrageous overreach by Texas and by the President. It is temporary, and in 2030, California will go back to having district boundaries decided by our gold-standard Independent Commission. It also calls for ALL states to adopt an Independent Commission to decide their district boundaries. And unlike Texas, California’s redistricting will be based solely on partisan considerations. Racial and ethnic balancing will remain untouched. All other district lines within California remain the same. And finally, the key point: it will be placed on the coming November 4 ballot, to be decided by California’s voters, not by politicians.
Proposition 50 is endorsed by the Mendocino County Democratic Party.
I highly recommend that we all vote Yes on Proposition 50.

Let the people vote without redistricting- Vote-NO
I think it’s absolutely ignorant to vote Yes on this bill. This is giving more power to the Democratic party to be the only ones to decide where our district should be in our state. This should be up for a vote with all the people of California it should not be left in the hands of the politicians. I can’t believe people would be ignorant enough not to read the whole damn thing and end up voting yes on it because some politician told them to. Big problem here in California!
Agree. Prop 50 is anything but a “bipartisan compromise.” It is a one-party power grab and endorsement for Newsom’s political ambitions to run for President. If politicians can manipulate the lines of election districts for their own personal political benefit and prolong longevity in office, is that really a “healthy democracy.” No, it isn’t.
Prop 50. Election Rigging Response Act says a bit in four words. In late July 2025 directed Texas Governor Abbot, a Trump supporter and the Texas legislature with a trumpmaga super majority to gerrymander the Texas congressional district to allow Republicans to flip 5 seats from Democrats. Governor Newsom responded that if the Texas legislature redrew their map to gain Trump Republicans seats he would ask California legislators to respond in kind . Texas gerrymandered and Newsom and California legislators redrew our map to flip five Republican seats to Democrats. In California, unlike Texas, voters will have to approve new map. Prop 50 will sunset after 2030 census and we will return to our Citizens Commission on Redistricting. If you support the Trumpmaga regime then you are likely to vote no. If you think, as I do, that Trump 2.0 seeks all power and favors billionaires and right wing extremism VOTE Yes on Prop 50 and stop trumpmaga.
The system is completely broken I am a non voter. Nothing matters either way. The thing you vote for they will mess that up too.
CA adopts the most stringent climate change policies in the world, not because it will have even a miniscule impact on CO2 levels but because Newsom says it is the right thing to do. CA must lead by example! That same principle apparently doesn’t apply to redistricting, that is, lead by example because its the right thing to do.
It may shock some people that TX is following the law. A court found three or four district maps violated the Voting Rights Act and order the change. Newsom, on the other hand, is effectively trying to amend the CA Constitution with a majority vote.
