Crews install new traffic signals at the intersection of Perkins Street and Orchard Avenue in Ukiah, Calif. in August 2025. (City of Ukiah via Bay City News)

UKIAH, CA., 8/23/25 —  Ukiah drivers and pedestrians will be thrilled to hear that paving is complete on Main Street. Irons are now being raised, which means raising manhole covers to the level of the newly paved street. Final striping and signage is scheduled for the week of Sept. 8-19.

And in other very good news, landscaping is set to begin on Gobbi Street in the next couple weeks. Landscaping is the end of a very long project!

But the pain is not over, as now comes Perkins Street.

Expect big changes: Perkins is getting a new eastbound lane with updated signals that will improve traffic flow. As you can imagine, adding a lane will cause delays. And the work also involves paving and repairing sidewalks and storm drains.

New lane comes with new signals

The signals being installed now are configured for new lanes not yet in place. This means the new signals are in “flash mode,” which inevitably causes delays. The city says that the signals will remain on flash until after paving and striping are completed and the lane opens up to traffic. The city advises using alternate routes when possible in the meantime.

The city tallied up the benefits of the long-running construction on Gobbi, Main and Perkins streets: “The project will enhance multimodal transportation in the City of Ukiah’s urban core by creating 84 ADA ramps, installing or upgrading 2.9 miles of bike lanes, 4.8 lane miles of roadway, and a traffic signal. This project will also enhance the utilities: water, sewer, and storm water for residents and commercial users.”

Construction hours: M-F, 6 a.m.- 7 p.m.

Perkins Street night work: M-F, 8 p.m.-8 a.m.

  1. They turned on the traffic lights Gobbi and Main. 5:30am Saturday morning I got to sit there for about 2 minutes and watch the lights cycle all the way Around before coming back and giving me a green. Not another single vehicle at the intersection. YaY for progress.

  2. Bike lanes and ADA ramps? Neither are being used. People in wheelchairs prefer the streets, and almost all bikers are homeless people who veer all over the road without warning.

    1. Woah! Are you for real? There are a lot of us that live and work in Ukiah and use our bikes to get around. School age people too. In the evenings when we are walking the kids in stroller, we are not the only parents doing so. The sidewalk improvements are hugely appreciated by many.
      Thank
