A wooden roadside sign marks the entrance to Jackson Demonstration State Forest, set against tall redwood trees. The sign reads “Entering Jackson Demonstration State Forest,” with the Cal Fire emblem and “Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, State of California,” mounted on a stone base amid grass and forest understory.

MENDOCINO CO., 8/20/25 – Firewood permits go on sale at Jackson Demonstration State Forest on Monday, Cal Fire said.

Permit holders can collect two cords per household. The collection period runs from 2 p.m. Monday through Oct. 1. The period could end earlier if, for example, the firewood is sold out or a major rain event occurs.

According to Cal Fire, only Mendocino County residents can receive permits due to the presence of sudden oak death. Transferring any wood infected with the disease out of Mendocino County is prohibited to limit further infestations.

To prevent fire starts, permit holders must abide by fire safety rules. Chainsaws must be equipped with a spark arrester. A long-handled shovel and fire extinguisher must also be available within 25 feet of the operating chainsaw.

Permits go on sale at 1 p.m. Monday at Cal Fire’s Fort Bragg office at 802 N. Main St., Fort Bragg. Permits are $20 each. Only 100 permits will be sold. For more information, call (707) 964-5674.
