MENDOCINO CO., 8/13/25 — This weekend, spearfishing aficionados and experienced divers are invited to participate in the second-annual King of NorCal spearfishing competition in Caspar.
On Saturday, the competition will be held at Caspar Beach RV Park and Campground at 6:30 a.m. The entry fee for divers is $40. The event’s organizers, locals Matt Mattison, Amanda Stephens and Lisi Horstman, have been promoting the competition through Facebook.
“The idea of this event is to bring the diving community together to do some spearfishing and earn some bragging rights for one year,” the event publication reads on Facebook. “It’s been a while since we all got together as a diving community and we shouldn’t wait any longer.”
According to the event publication, all of the proceeds will be donated to the All Waters Protection & Access Coalition, an organization that advocates for fishing rights and coastal access.
On Saturday, participants should be at the Caspar Beach RV Park and Campground by 6:30 a.m. to sign a waiver and pay the entry fee. Divers must register with a buddy for the competition to help ensure safety in the water. The event is solely for free divers and does not allow scuba equipment, but divers may use water transportation such as kayaks or boats. All divers must return to the campground by 2:30 p.m. for safety reasons.
The King of NorCal spearfishing competition will also host a potluck lunch for participants, with a roasted pig provided. Attendees are asked to bring one dish for the potluck. A small raffle will be held as part of the competition to raise money for future spearfishing events.
The competition is weather permitting. Organizers will call off the event if there are unsafe weather or ocean conditions. For more information about the King of NorCal event, visit the Facebook event page.
