MENDOCINO CO., 8/26/25 — Hundreds turned out Saturday for a day of fun in the fog at the 49th annual Great Day in Elk, a fundraiser for the Greenwood Community Center.
On the Mendocino Coast, August is playfully known as “Fogust,” and Saturday was no exception, with the sun making only a brief appearance after the noon parade. The colorful parade featured Smoky the Bear, the Caspar Community Center, and a float just for dads, among others.
The vibe was upbeat, with activities for all ages: fresh-made focaccia from the bread oven, a kids’ area with tie-dye and a sandbox, tiny kittens up for adoption, fresh-pressed apple cider, live belly dancing, a silent auction, a watermelon-eating contest and more.
The cake auction was a standout, raising $8,000 from just eight cakes, according to organizers. The highest bid went to a cake by local baker Shani Christensen, a Food Network contest and national award winner.
With the 49th event such a success, it will be exciting to see what’s in store for the 50th celebration next year.
