MENDOCINO CO., 7/25/25 – The National Weather Service in Eureka has upgraded a Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning across multiple Northern California counties for Friday, as expected dry thunderstorms and strong, erratic winds heighten the risk of wildfire ignition.
The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for portions of Mendocino and Lake counties, as well as Trinity County.
In Mendocino County, the warning includes Round Valley and Covelo and most of northeastern Mendocino County east of U.S. Highway 101.
The weather pattern is expected to bring isolated to scattered thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening. Forecasters warn that abundant lightning and gusty, unpredictable winds may develop, particularly in areas with dry vegetation and low humidity, creating dangerous fire conditions.
“In response to the predicted lightning and possible incident activity, our Unit will be staffing additional resources and an additional strike team of engines … (and) will be staging in the region to assist with any incidents that arise,” Cal Fire officials said on social media posts.
The Red Flag Warning signals a combination of weather factors that could lead to extreme fire behavior. Fire officials are urging residents to remain vigilant, avoid outdoor burning, and be prepared for rapid changes in fire conditions.
The Mendocino County Office of Emergency Services recommends residents familiarize themselves with their evacuation zone.
