UKIAH, CA., 6/17/25 – The cause of death of a man who died in after being arrested in Ukiah in February has been determined as an unintentional drug overdose, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Emil Redzic, 29, of Ukiah, died on Feb. 26 after experiencing a medical emergency during his arrest on Wednesday.

Redzic was arrested for allegedly possessing a stolen vehicle from Contra Costa County, resisting arrest and violating probation.

While being apprehended, Redzic exhibited what deputies described as “exhibiting an altered level of consciousness.”

After he was detained, he went unconscious. Deputies used Narcan to reverse the effects of a possible opioid overdose, but he continued to have a medical emergency.

He was taken to Ukiah Valley Hospital and despite efforts of hospital staff, he died.

Redzic overdosed on a mix of methamphetamine and gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB.

According to the U. S. Drug Enforcement Administration, GHB is a controlled substance used to treat narcolepsy, among other health concerns. It can create a euphoric and calming feeling in low doses, however high doses can result in unconsciousness, coma and death.
