MENDOCINO CO., 6/23/25 – Residential burn permits will be suspended across Mendocino County starting Monday, Cal Fire said.
Residential burning of landscape debris, like branches and leaves, will be prohibited starting at 8 a.m. on Monday in Cal Fire’s State Responsibility Area across the county.
According to Cal Fire, the suspension comes as warm temperatures and winds are quickly drying out grass across the region, which increases the likelihood of vegetation fires.
Cal Fire said it has already responded to 2,678 wildfires across the state since January 1.
The agency is asking residents to prepare for wildfires by maintaining a minimum of 100 feet of defensible space around every home and building on their property.
Cal Fire recommends:
- Clearing all dead and/or dying vegetation within 100 feet of all structures.
- Landscaping with fire resistant plants and non-flammable ground cover.
- Finding alternative ways to dispose of landscape debris, like chipping or hauling it to a green or biomass waste facility.
Cal Fire also wants to ensure every resident has a plan in place in case an evacuation is necessary.
Temporary burn permits for health and safety purposes may still be issued by Cal Fire. This includes for agriculture and industrial type burning or for fire training.
The residential burn permit suspension does not apply to campfires on private property or at organized campgrounds. Campfire permits can be procured via Cal Fire here.
