MENDOCINO CO., 5/1/25 — Do you wonder if your tax dollars are spent wisely? How are schools functioning? Why does your local water district seem to always be on the ropes?
These are some of the questions that Mendocino County grand jurors examine. In response to citizen complaints or concerns of the jurors themselves, those serving on the 19-member grand jury interview county and special district employees, citizens, examine financials and issue a written report that determines local agencies’ successes and problems and makes suggestions of how to address shortfalls.
Reports from the last two years have included reviews of Mendocino County Human Resources, Mendocino County Family and Children’s Services, Ukiah Unified School District’s Special Education Program, Mendocino County Jail, and many other agencies.
If you have ever wanted to contribute to democracy, serving on a grand jury is a vital service to yourself and to the community at large. You can provide oversight to our government to ensure its functions are transparent, responsive to citizens, and efficient.
Jurors typically spend about 10-20 hours per week examining the issues assigned to them. Jurors serve a one-year term but can reapply. Applicants must be US citizens, 18 or over, live in Mendocino County, and be fluent in English, as reports and interviews are given orally and in writing.
Applications are available online here or by picking up an application at the court at 100 North State Street, Room 303 in Ukiah or by calling the Mendocino County Grand Jury at 707-463-4320. Applications must be received by June 23.

It is 100% truly fascinating they ask for Grand jurors they want people to help evaluate things yet, they filter the grand jurors applications immensely. They don’t want anyone who’s going to go against what they want. Whistleblowers people really concerned about our local governments and challenging issues will be ignored and dismissed from appointment to the jury.

Huh?? I think I understand what you are trying to say..however it appears that a possible language barrier may be clouding things a bit.. (sometimes “spell check” helps here .but not always) Please don’t take my words as an insult.. I am sorry if I come across insensitive .. I think (if I’m translating you correctly) that you are making some good points..especially referring to buildings and county property being used with wastefull misguidance..and especially the need to pay attention to where the ENTIRE AMOUNT OF PROVIDED FUNDING IS DIRECTED… As well as a need to keep a close eye on the directors themselves along with those in charge of creating the “services” for which accounts are created and funds are provided.. I hope that I read you correctly because if I did I think you have put focus on some important topics to consider and I thank you for sharing a voice of concern. I wish more people would..
Just wondering if the grand jury has the power to investigate the DA’s office…
Can anyone inform us even a single time the BOS followed the recommendations of the GJ??
Sure. Let’s volunteer to spend our time after the people in county government have already collected OUR money and squandered it on their corrupt selves. Yeah- and then they ignore the Grand Jury’s recommendations. The county government is full of hacks and opportunists and I don’t think a Grand Jury report is going to fix it. There needs to be a general revolt with support for whistleblowers. A take-down of that corrupt DA would be a good place to start. It’s pretty darn obvious Eyster used OUR resources to run a personal failed attack on another of our elected officers and WE are left paying the bills for his illegal vendetta. Why is he even still in office?!
