MENDOCINO CO., 6/18/25 – A prescribed burn will take place at Shamrock Ranch near Laytonville on Thursday, said Cal Fire. Smoke and firefighting aircraft may be visible in the area, including along U.S. Highway 101.
The burn is a continuation of a series of prescribed burns that Cal Fire implemented has implemented on the ranch since October.
On Thursday, Cal Fire plans to treat approximately 10 acres of grasslands, chaparral, and understory vegetation within oak woodlands and mixed conifer habitats.
The burn will start, weather permitting, around 6 p.m. and conclude around 12 a.m.
The burn is part of the state’s efforts to reduce fuels as part of the California Fire Plan and California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.
Cal Fire said it plans to create “a mosaic of variously burned vegetation and islands of unburned habitat.”
Shamrock Ranch is located southeast of Laytonville. Smoke and firefighting aircraft may be visible from the surrounding area and U.S. Route 101.
According to Cal Fire, the burn will be conducted under specific weather and fuel conditions. If conditions make it unsafe to conduct the burn, it will be postponed.
