MENDOCINO CO., 6/11/25 – Student athletes at Anderson Valley Junior-Senior High in Boonville will soon be competing and exercising on a state-of-the-art sports field thanks to a grant from Clean California, Caltrans said Friday.
According to Caltrans, the $4.7 million grant will fund the installation of a soccer and football field surrounded by an all-weather, six-lane running track with a rubberized, artificial surface.
The grant is funded through Clean California, an initiative by Governor Gavin Newsom to fund community beautification projects, trash removal and job creation across the state. The grant program is administered by Caltrans.

The new field will benefit not only students, but also the broader Anderson Valley community where the closest gym or workout facility is over 20 miles away.
The field will be open for public use before and after school, on weekends, and during the summer.
The new field is expected to be completed by spring 2026, Caltrans said.
At a groundbreaking event on Friday, Anderson Valley Unified School District Superintendent Kristin Larson Balliet expressed gratitude for the grant. “This project represents a significant investment in our school and community, creating a space that promotes health, recreation, and school pride.”
