MENDOCINO CO., 4/25/25 – Two Mendocino County hospitals have been named among the cleanest hospitals in the country, the Mendocino Coast Health Care District said Friday.

Adventist Health Mendocino Coast in Fort Bragg and Adventist Health Howard Memorial in Willits were each given five-star ratings by Becker’s Hospital Review, a healthcare industry publication.

Becker’s reviewed hospital surveys in which patients review cleanliness satisfaction levels. It awarded 374 hospitals with five-star ratings. According to the American Hospital Association there are 6,093 hospitals in the U.S. as of 2025. That means only 6% were awarded five-star ratings.

Only 16 hospitals in California were recognized by Becker’s. Adventist Health has five hospitals on the list. In addition to the two in Mendocino County, Adventist Health Clear Lake in neighboring Lake County was also listed.

Peter Johnston serves as facility manager of both Mendocino County hospitals, the district said. “He and his dedicated staff have done an outstanding job for our community.”

  1. Having been a patient at Howard Hospital I find it 5 star in all phases from emergency section to general surgery patient rooms the staff the imaging house keeping Roots cafeteria physical therapy, it’s all above board for Me 👍👍👍’

  2. Howard hospital treated me like a princess during my two stays for shoulder replacements. Roots is so good a restaurant sometimes I go there with a friend for lunch!

    1. In Willits, the Howard Memorial Hospital is simply amazing! Mary Jane Cummings, if you have not been a patient there yet, you might want to go to their restaurant which is open to the public to get a sneaking look at what they feed the admitted patients. When I was there for surgerylast year. I could order off of an extensive menu from morning till night with no restrictions. I was happy to have breakfast food in the afternoon or dinner if I wanted it, salmon, smoothies, all kinds of wonderful vegetables. It was more like being in a classy hotel than a hospital. As for the patient care, it was exemplary. Everyone is so kind and thoughtful. I’m very happy to see them get some recognition, which is well deserved. Much of the credit goes to Dr. William Bowen for his innovative vision for a fabulous hospital.

  3. the Howard Memorial Hospital is not a place of comfort for me, i came in with a shattered collarbone at 3 in the morning and everyone of the staff members looked annoyed that i was there. The Doctor that saw me asked me ‘what my thoughts were on drunk driving’ and i replied by telling him to put aside the silly questions that aren’t going to lead anywhere and give me my pain meds, we argued and i was sent home with hydrocodone and the day i went into surgery my surgeon told me if fort bragg Howard Memorial had sent the X-rays right away he would have operated on me the day of the accident. do better fort bragg
