FORT BRAGG, CA., 4/17/25 – A woman was arrested early Wednesday morning in Fort Bragg for allegedly assaulting police officers with flowerpots and trespassing at an occupied apartment, the Fort Bragg Police Department said.

At 12:32 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to reports of a screaming woman banging on the front door of an apartment in the 200 block of East Redwood Avenue in Fort Bragg.

The callers reported that they did not know the woman.

Upon arrival, officers found the woman on an apartment balcony allegedly waving a kitchen knife and screaming. The officers recognized the woman from prior interactions as 47-year-old Jenny Malagon of Fort Bragg.

According to police, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by asking Malagon to put down the knife. She continued to scream and pace back and forth on the balcony.

Moments later, Malagon allegedly picked up an estimated 10-pound flowerpot and threw it down from the balcony at the officers. She threw two more flowerpots, missing one officer by inches.

An officer standing at the bottom of the stairs deployed his Taser stun gun to subdue Malagon. The effort failed and Malagon repeatedly broke the Taser wires, police said.

Malagon allegedly broke the window of the occupied apartment she was standing outside of and entered it.

Police said one officer entered through the broken window and unlocked the front door for his fellow officers. He cut his hand during the process, wrapping it in clothing to control the bleeding while assisting other officers.

Malagon then ran to the bathroom while the apartment residents hid in the bedroom. Some officers blocked the bathroom door while other officers escorted the residents from the apartment safely, police said.

According to police, officers broke down the bathroom door and found Malagon allegedly defending herself with a toilet bowl tank lid.

The officers descended into the bathroom and overpowered Malagon. She was taken into custody without injury, police said.

After a medical check, Malagon was booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon likely to cause great bodily harm, resisting officers, felony vandalism, trespassing on occupied property and being under the influence of a controlled substance.

The officer who cut his hand on the broken window received care at a hospital and was released.

Police Chief Neil Cervenka praised the officers’ efforts to deescalate the situation without the use of deadly force.

“Critical incidents such as these often result in the use of deadly force. However, our courageous officers faced a potentially lethal situation and resolved it without injury to the suspect,” he said, “While officers using deadly force make the news across the country, this type of resolution is far more common, but less reported on.”

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Sgt. Welter at (707) 961-2800, ext. 212.
