MENDOCINO CO., 4/10/25 — With libraries in the crosshairs of the culture wars, it’s easy to forget the many roles that libraries serve in a community. For a child, getting a library card is a bit like getting your driver’s license —suddenly you’re cleared to explore a vast universe of possibilities.
For adults, the library allows research into careers and colleges, offers help with taxes, serves as a hub for video games and internet searches, provides a cool environment when it’s scorching outside, and most of all, offers books and movies and magazines that stretch our imaginations.
Mendocino County’s libraries satisfy all these functions and more. “In the 21st century, libraries have become a third space, a place for people to socialize, build connections, and learn about the world,” said Mellisa Hannum, Mendocino County Librarian. “Literacy and the freedom to read are also important aspects of our modern library spaces.”
