UKIAH, CA., 3/4/25 – A home’s beautifully landscaped yard may be a source of pride for its owner, but it’s even more so when it’s a fire-smart yard – a yard designed to mitigate the threat of wildfires.
To help property owners prepare their properties for the upcoming wildfire season, the City of Ukiah and the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council will host a free Fire Resistive Lanscaping Workshop on Thursday.
The workshop will feature two specialists on the subject: Jim Xerogeanes, retired director of the Mendocino College Agriculture Department for 25 years and a font of knowledge on landscaping, planting and pruning techniques to create beautiful fire-smart yards and Chief Doug Hutchinson of the Ukiah Valley Fire Department. Hutchinson will present on defensible space and other fire protection strategies.
“As wildfire risks continue to grow, homeowners can take proactive steps to safeguard their properties,” said a Mendocino County Fire Safe Council spokesperson. “This free workshop is a must-attend for residents looking to create a safer, more fire-resilient property. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from the experts to enhance your defensible space.”
The workshop takes place at 6 p.m. on Mar. 6 at the Ukiah City Hall Chambers, 300 Seminary Ave., Ukiah.
