A long-period westerly swell build into the waters late Friday. Beachgoers should be cautious as this swell presents a high sneaker wave threat. There will be periods of calm waters between wave sets. Be cautious when visiting steep beaches and jetties and remember to never turn your back on the ocean!

MENDOCINO CO., 2/28/25– A beach hazard warning remains in place for the Mendocino Coast through Sunday morning, said the National Weather Service.

The weather service is asking people to avoid steep beaches, rocks and jetties.

The warning is in place now through 10 a.m. Sunday.

According to the weather service, “large, unexpected waves can sweep across the beach without warning, sweeping people into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches.”

Forecasters also said that large objects such as logs can be moved by the waves, crushing people and pets caught underneath.

“Don’t be fooled by an ocean that looks calm,” the weather service said. “There can be 30 minutes of small waves before a sneaker wave strikes … stay much further back from the water and never turn your back on the ocean.”
