The Allure of Mendocino

Mendocino County, encompassing more than 275,000 acres dotted with rolling hills, picturesque vineyards and coastal views, is a sanctuary for the senses. With more than 90 wineries and 14 distinct American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), this region is rich in diversity. Among its AVAs, Anderson Valley, established in 1983, stands out for its cool, foggy climate that fosters the growth of high-quality pinot noir, chardonnay, and sparkling wines. The valley’s unique microclimate is a product of its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, with temperatures averaging between 50 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit during the growing season, allowing winemakers to craft wines celebrated for their elegance and complexity.

A Commitment to Sustainability

One of Mendocino County’s defining features is the unparalleled commitment of its winemakers to sustainable practices. More than 50 percent of the county’s vineyards are either organic or sustainably farmed, which is a higher proportion than any other wine region in the United States, with 25 percent of those planted acreages certified organic and increasingly regenerative organic. This dedication helps produce vibrant, expressive wines that are a true reflection of the land. Key certifications include the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and Demeter for biodynamic practices. Notably, the region is home to the first certified organic vineyard in California, Fetzer Vineyards, which has led the way in sustainable wine production since its inception in 1968.

Exploring the AVAs

Delving into the diverse AVAs of Mendocino is akin to embarking on an adventure through different microclimates and soil types.

  • Anderson Valley: This AVA is notable for producing around 60 percent of California’s sparkling wines, thanks to its cool climate suited for aromatic varietals. Local legends like Scharffenberger Cellars and Roederer Estate have established a benchmark for quality, with Scharffenberger awarded a 92-point score for its Brut Excellence. Tasting at these venues also allows visitors to soak in breathtaking views of vineyards framed by lush forests.
  • Mendocino Ridge: At an elevation ranging from 1,200 to 2,600 feet, Mendocino Ridge offers growers a unique terroir characterized by well-drained volcanic soils. This AVA produces about 60 percent red wine, focusing on varietals like zinfandel, which thrives in its warm, sunlight-soaked days. Notable wineries such as Parducci Wine Cellars and Coyote Sonoma are known for their rich and robust blends.
  • Potter Valley: Renowned for its exquisite sauvignon blanc, Potter Valley showcases the influence of the nearby Eel River, creating a cooler microclimate that results in wines with refreshing acidity and vibrant fruit flavors. Winemakers here frequently utilize strategies like cold fermentation to preserve aromatic qualities. Established names like Adler Fels Winery highlight this AVA’s potential with exceptional sauvignon blanc that consistently garners praise.
  • Pine Mountain-Cloverdale Peak: This AVA, part of the greater Mayacamas mountain range, sits high above the valley, offering a cooler growing season that leads to rich, complex flavor profiles in its wines. Representing a handful of boutique producers, the area is celebrated for its expressive cabernet sauvignon and high-elevation zinfandels, which often exceed 15 percent alcohol, resulting in bold and full-bodied wines.
