MENDOCINO CO., 11/8/24 — Donald Trump was named president-elect Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the country, ushering in questions about what his administration intends regarding public policy. To address this question, specifically how big money can influence Trump’s policies, the Grassroots Institute will host a workshop titled “Will Our Democracy Control Big Money?” on Sunday.

The workshop will feature Donne Brownsey, chair emeritus of the California Coastal Commission, veteran lobbyist, and public policy advocate. Brownsey will draw on her experience in fighting the gun lobby to ban assault rifles in California, facing down big investor-owned utilities to promote solar power and protecting the California coastline from over-development, to explore what we can expect in the next four years and how the people can influence state and local governments to act on their best interests.

A portion of the workshop will also be dedicated to discussing national, state and local election results and for attendees to discuss their feelings about the election.

This is the fourth in a series of workshops the Grassroots Institute is holding about the election. The institute is a Mendocino-based nonprofit with the mission to “better our community because we value peace, justice, equity and sustainability for all.”

Future workshops will be held on Nov. 24, Dec. 8 and 22 and perhaps into the New Year.

“Will Our Democracy Control Big Money” takes place Sunday from 3-5 p.m. at the Community Center of Mendocino, 998 School St., Mendocino or via Zoom at https://zoom.us/j/88027784572. The password is gri. Admission is free and donations are welcomed. Visit grassroots-institute.org for more information.
