MENDOCINO CO., 11/21/24 – The Garcia River flooded between Point Arena and Manchester on Thursday.

As a result, a portion of state Highway 1 is closed Caltrans said.

The closure starts just south of Miner Hole Road near Point Arena and Mountain View Road in Manchester.

Motorists can use Eureka Hill Road and Mountain View Road to travel between Point Arena and Manchester, adding an hour onto the commute.

The closure is the result of heavy rain from the atmospheric river, which caused the Garcia River to flood the roadway. The Garcia River topped 13.6 feet at 12:15 p.m. Thursday.

An estimated time of reopening is not available.

Caltrans asks motorists to track current road conditions at https://roads.dot.ca.gov/ or by calling 1-800-427-7623.

  1. Thank you so much for covering the Garcia River ,Hwy 1 closure.
When I checked CalTrans their camera was down. It’s sometimes hard to get info on our roads here. Caltrans seems to think North Sonoma county is Central Ca. They also don’t recognize that Hwy 116 headed east from Jenner even exists. I know you cover Mendocino county, but those of us who shop, eat, get mail etc in Gualala, we count on you. Thanks again❣️

  2. The closure of Hwy 1 in this area is actually from Hathaway Creek (a tributary of the Garcia) backing up due to it being overgrown and not maintained for the past 15 or so years. This closure, that people seem to take for granted as an ‘act of god’ is completely unnecessary and preventable. Clear the brush out of the creek so the water can flow.
