FORT BRAGG, CA., 11/3/24 — The nonprofit group Change Our Name Fort Bragg formed to advocate dropping the surname of Confederate General Braxton Bragg from the city’s name. The group has not proposed a new name but according to its website, it suggests soliciting the community for ideas. A long list of names has already been suggested, including Bluffside, Glass Beach, Headlands, Poppy Beach, Whale Point and many more.

The group hosts teach-ins monthly. This month’s features Holly Tannen, who sings English and Scottish ballads and also penned a song about Braxton Bragg, noting that he was a slaveholder, disliked by his subordinates and men, and considered a failure as a general. Tannen holds a master’s degree in folklore from UC Berkeley.
