MENDOCINO CO., 10/21/24 – Three prescribed burns are taking place this week in Mendocino County. It’s the third week in a row that significant burns have been scheduled.

The first is the continuation of a series of prescribed burns at Shamrock Ranch near Laytonville. According to Cal Fire, the burn started Monday morning and will continue through Friday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. daily.

Cal Fire will be treating an estimated 600 acres to create “a mosaic of variously burned vegetation and islands of unburned habitat.”

Shamrock Ranch is located southeast of Laytonville. Smoke may be visible from U.S. Route 101 and from the Cherry Creek subdivision south of Shamrock Ranch.

On Tuesday, Cal Fire will start another prescribed burn in Jackson Demonstration State Forest. The burn will take place daily over the course of three or four weeks, depending on weather and fuel conditions.

Cal Fire said 280 acres of timber understory will be burned.

The third prescribed burn will start Wednesday at the University of California’s Hopland Research and Extension Center. The burn will take place daily from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. through Friday.

Managed by Cal Fire, the burn will cover approximately 150 acres.

All three burns are part of the state’s efforts to reduce fuels as part of the California Fire Plan and California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.

Smoke and firefighting aircraft may be visible from the surrounding areas. All three burns will be postponed or canceled if weather or fuels do not allow for safe conditions.

  1. Thanks for the information! We were wondering and it’s really good to know where the smoke’s coming from. And good to know that they’re doing it!

  2. Where are all the displaced wildlife going and what are they going to eat? Years ago there was a huge “ not controlled” fire in the hills of Willits, animals ended up coming into town. Many of the people up Canyon Rd got together and provided hay and whatnot so they wouldn’t starve or be shot trying to survive.. is there a plan ???
