MENDOCINO CO., 10/23/24 – It still may be autumn, but Mendocino County can expect a taste of winter early Thursday morning when temperatures are expected to dip as low as 29 degrees according to the National Weather Service.

The anticipated weather led to the weather service announcing a frost advisory and a freeze warning for parts of the county.

A freeze warning is in place for northern interior Mendocino County from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday. The warning includes Covelo, Laytonville, Willits, Redwood Valley, Leggett, Piercy and parts of Potter Valley. These areas are forecast to experience temperatures as low as 29 degrees, said the weather service.

Other parts of the county will be under a frost advisory from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Thursday, including Calpella, Philo, Hopland, Boonville and parts of Potter Valley. These areas may see temperatures as low as 33 degrees.

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” the weather service said in a statement. Plants should be covered or brought inside for protection.

The cold temperatures are also dangerous for people and animals. Here are additional tips from the weather service:

  • Stay indoors during the worst part of the cold
  • Keep a winter survival kit in your car if you must travel
  • Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc. in your vehicle
  • Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts
  • Check on older adults, children, outdoor workers and those with chronic illnesses
  • Unhoused individuals should seek or be provided shelter
  • Bring pets inside
