MENDOCINO CO., 8/30/24 – Labor Day weekend has arrived in Mendocino County. That means locals and tourists alike will enjoy lazy tubing down our rivers, backyard barbecues, Paul Bunyan Days in Fort Bragg, and exploring wine country.

And with all that fun comes a warning from the California Highway Patrol (CHP): all available officers will be on duty this weekend.

CHP announced Friday that it is implementing a Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) starting Friday at 6:01 p.m. through Monday at 11:59 p.m. This means all hands-on deck for the statewide law enforcement agency.

According to the CHP, 38 individuals were killed in crashes statewide during the 2023 Labor Day MEP. Almost half of those killed were not wearing seatbelts.

In addition to crashes, driving under the influence is a major concern for CHP. The agency reports that 1,064 individuals were arrested last Labor Day weekend. Driving under the influence doesn’t just include alcohol, but also drugs, including cannabis, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

“Everyone’s safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices. Drive sober, stay focused and help keep our roads safe for all who use them,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives – yours and others.”

The CHP reminds citizens to have a designated sober driver or to take public transportation if you’re planning to drink. If you see a driver that is impaired call 9-1-1 immediately. Dispatchers will ask for a license plate number, location and direction of travel. “Your call could save a life,” the agency says.
