Mussel quarantine now in place through Oct. 31; no sport harvesting

MENDOCINO Co, 5/12/23 — The California Department of Public Health has issued its annual statewide order prohibiting the public and sport fishers from harvesting mussels to eat. According to state data, more than 99 percent of all illnesses and deaths related to paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) reported here since 1927 have occurred during the May to October period, when the Mussel Quarantine Order is in effect. 

The quarantine period is set to lift Oct. 31, but could be extended if levels of biotoxins remain high.
