MENDOCINO Co., 8/17/19 — The Grassroots Institute has been hard at work over the last few years building county-wide map of the “Economy for our the Common Good,” which charts different community organizations, co-operatives, and businesses working towards a more sustainable and democratic economy here in Mendocino County. But there are plenty of local groups still not listed, and so the Grassroots Institute will be holding a 8 part course this fall at the Mendocino Community Center to expand the map.
The group has been surveying local businesses and organizations, as well as holding workshops to build connections between like-minded groups working on more equitable economic development here in Mendocino County. You can read more about their work here, and on their website, as well as learn more about the “solidarity economy,” which includes community organizations, co-operatives, and collectives, here. The full map of Mendocino groups can be found here, and students in the course will be adding more groups to the map this fall.
The course begins August 31 at 10 a.m. and will be held every other Saturday. Details on how to register and more about the course can be found below, along with the flyer for the course:
Fall-2019-Class-Flyer-8.5×11Building an Economy for the Common Good
Taking off from the enthusiastic launch of the Grassroots Institute’s Mendocino County Economy for Our Common Good map, we invite you to help us make that economy a reality at an 8-class series of workshops this Fall. This multi-year project to build a vibrant, strong, healthy and sustainable future for Mendocino County, has engaged scores of people across the county. Everybody is invited to join us. Whether you are a veteran of the project or only hearing about it for the first time, we need your participation.
These workshops will be held at the Mendocino Community Center every other Saturday starting August 31 at 10 AM. We will work together connecting existing organizations, and identifying new organizations and campaigns, necessary to fulfill the promise of an Economy for Our Common Good. All of these enterprises and campaigns challenge our dominant economic, political and social models by taking actions around environmental concerns, social justice and/or economic democracy. We will continue the work of brainstorming new organizations and campaigns for the common good around housing, the environment, money, education, healthcare, etc.
Together we will investigate and clarify the values, rationale and essential elements of Our Economy for the Common Good using materials from multiple sources including the Next Systems Project, Evonomics.com and the One Earth movement. We will also grow our map of the Economy for the Common Good in Mendocino County by identifying and researching organizations that are not yet on our map. All of this work will guarantee a strong, vital, just and sustainable future in Northern California. For more information or to register for the workshops, call or write Jim Tarbell (964-1323, [email protected]) or Carrie Durkee (937-2554, ([email protected]). Go to www.grassroots-institute.org for links to our existing map of the Mendocino County Economy for Our Common Good map and study guides of our work on this project. We look forward to your participation in this important work.
Thanks Kate! We’re looking forward to a great class this fall! Please come join us on every other Saturday @ The Community Center of Mendocinco (10 til noon & sometimes beyond!).
