Smoke may be visible from Dos Rios, Covelo and Willits, and engines and aircraft will be on scene. So if you see smoke and helicopters in the direction of Dos Rios, it’s probably the prescribed burn.
The prescribed burn is part of Cal Fire’s Vegetation Management Program, and several more are planned this year, weather permitting. Yesterday a burn was conducted south of Covelo. The burns are occurring primarily on private land, read more about the yesterdays burn and the purpose of prescribed burning here.
The burns are set with utmost caution, and a fire perimeter already established, according to Cal Fire:
Burning is planned for Thursday weather and air quality conditions permitting. The burn will be conducted under very tight restrictions for the personal safety of firefighters and area residents. If there are any indications that the burn cannot be conducted in a safe manner, such as high winds or local fire activity, the burn will be cancelled. CAL FIRE reminds all residents that their safety is of the utmost concern. An excerpt from the Cal Fire press release.
