FORT BRAGG, CA., 9/24/26 – Laguna Point at MacKerricher State Park will close to vehicles from Oct. 1 through Oct. 21 to allow for emergency repairs on the coastal bluff road, California State Parks Sonoma Mendocino Coast District announced.
The road closure begins at 6 a.m. on Oct. 1, just south of the Lake Cleone Day-Use parking lot, blocking vehicle access to Laguna Point, a popular spot for wildlife viewing, tidepooling and seal watching. Paving and stabilization work is expected to be completed by Oct. 21.
“The road edge is falling due to coastal erosion just west of the Haul Road bridge,” Mike Walgren, senior environmental scientist with the district, told the Mendocino Voice. “There are currently concrete barriers at the failing road edge.”
Walgren said the expected El Niño storms and sea level rise threaten to cause complete failure of the road.
The Lake Cleone Day-Use parking lot and restrooms will remain open. Pedestrians, bicyclists and equestrians can still reach Laguna Point and Haul Road from the Lake Cleone lot via a delineated route during the road maintenance, Walgren said.
