MENDOCINO CO., 7/10/26 — The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide off Rifle Range Road in Covelo, where a woman’s death was reported just before 9 p.m. Thursday.
The victim has been identified as a woman from Covelo but her name has not yet been released, according to sheriff’s Capt. Quincy Cromer.
The sheriff’s Investigations Bureau is handling the case with help from the Mendocino County District Attorney’s Office and other county investigators, Cromer said. Criminalists from the California Department of Justice are responding to assist.
No arrests have been announced.
Per emergency radio traffic Thursday night, callers reported a woman dead with an apparent gunshot wound at a property in the 22500 block of Rifle Range Road.
Deputies were directed down a dirt driveway and marked the property with crime scene tape. Units at the scene reported finding multiple rifle casings.
Dispatchers broadcast lookouts for two vehicles: a burgundy or maroon Dodge Ram pickup occupied by two women, and a black van seen leaving the area.
Cromer said he has no information connecting the homicide to a separate call Thursday evening requesting a welfare check on a woman on Spyrock Road, north of Laytonville.
Covelo sits in Round Valley in northeastern Mendocino County. The sheriff’s office takes anonymous tips at 707-234-2100.
Cromer said more information will be released as it becomes available.
