SONOMA CO., 2/16/26 – Shindig Social Club in Sea Ranch will mark its third anniversary with a two-night program honoring the life and legacy of John Trudell on Friday and Saturday.
Trudell, a Santee Dakota author, poet, musician, actor and political activist, died in 2015. Among the occupation leaders was Richard Oakes, a Mohawk organizer who helped lead the takeover and recruited participants from across the Bay Area. Oakes was shot and killed in Sonoma County’s Annapolis in 1972. The man charged in his death was acquitted of voluntary manslaughter w after a jury verdict of self-defense.
According to organizers, the program includes a screening of the documentary film “Trudell,” which chronicles his life and activism, including the occupation of Alcatraz and its impact. Live Native flute music by Kevin Village-Stone, of Cherokee descent, will precede the film. Poetry readings may also take place.
