“Mission Gráfica: Reflecting a Community in Print” opens Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Grace Hudson Museum and runs through Feb. 1, 2026. The opening reception will coincide with Ukiah’s First Friday celebration on Nov. 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. The museum will offer free admission all day that Friday.
Founded in 1982 in San Francisco’s Mission District, Mission Gráfica became one of the Bay Area’s most influential political poster collectives. It attracted both well-established regional artists and creators active in international solidarity movements — collaborating with everyone from rock musicians to guerrilla activists.
Today, Mission Gráfica continues to offer workshops and classes while serving as a political and artistic meeting ground for artists from California and across Latin America. This traveling exhibition from Exhibit Envoy features dozens of screenprints by various artists, showcasing a wide range of styles, themes and sensibilities.
Mission Gráfica began as part of the Mission Cultural Center through the joint efforts of René Castro, a political refugee from Chile’s Pinochet dictatorship, and Jos Sances, a Sicilian American draft resister with a background in commercial printing. In the 1990s, under the direction of Juan R. Fuentes, the workshop expanded its community focus — supporting both personal artistic expression and activism around local issues such as gentrification and homelessness.
Adding a local connection, the Grace Hudson Museum’s presentation will include artwork by Felicia Rice, a Mendocino Coast book artist. One of her recent works, “Heavy Lifting,” was created in partnership with Ukiah poet Theresa Whitehill.
An edible First Friday
During First Friday, visitors can enjoy “edible art” from The Great Tortilla Conspiracy, a food-based collective also founded in San Francisco’s Mission District. Guests can watch members screenprint satirical images with chocolate on tortillas, then toast their creations on a comal to make quesadillas. Jazz, flamenco and North African guitarist Yoba Bouabid will perform during the event.
The Grace Hudson Museum is at 431 S. Main St. in Ukiah. Call (707) 467-2836 or visit http://www.gracehudsonmuseum.org for more information.
