UKIAH, CA., 9/8/25 – Progress is being made on the construction of the Mendocino County Superior Courthouse in Ukiah.

According to the Superior Court of California, a 265-foot crane will be erected at the site of the future courthouse on East Perkins Street this week. The new crane will be visible throughout the city, altering Ukiah’s skyline.

The crane will be an integral part of building the 3-story, 82,000-square-foot courthouse

The crane will help install the Idaho-built structural steel frames for the building, a process the Superior Court expects to be completed by early October.

After the frames are in place, decking for the roof and flooring will be installed, with expected completion in November.

The goal is to complete as much of the exterior of the courthouse as possible before rainy season starts, the Superior Court said.

After the decking is installed, the courthouse will be wrapped in heavy plastic so crews can work on the interior during the winter.

The $120 million courthouse, funded by the Judicial Council of California, will replace the current courthouse in downtown Ukiah that was built in 1951.

The new courthouse is expected to be completed in 2027. The future use for the current courthouse has yet to be determined.

  1. $120 million for any building is insane. That amount of money could build so much housing… how many property owners will have their taxes increased to cover this.

    1. Not local taxes. Mendocino County doesn’t pay directly for the new courthouse. The county provides the land (in Ukiah’s case, it’s state-owned), but all construction money comes from the state. Funding is handled through the California budget, mainly the General Fund (taxes collected statewide), and in the past through court fees, fines, and bonds. The Judicial Council manages those funds and decides which counties get new courthouses based on safety and need.

    2. I think you’re absolutely correct and then when I read where they were locating it all I could think was don’t we have enough problems with traffic there and little parking? My God what an idiocy this county is with what they do with our money! Why do we keep voting in this city council that we have and the Board of Supervisors we have it just doesn’t make any sense to me anymore. What is wrong with these idiots that voting them into office? I think that’s a solid question

  2. The cost doesn’t bother me as much as the location and design. I worry that the Perkins Street corridor will be clogged with traffic for the Courthouse, Habit, and the.l hospital. While I am happy that the Dennys building will be renovated, I wonder if the Courthouse was ill conceived and wrongly placed.

  4. Josef Stalin would love this design! Why not do something attractive like face the front of the building half-way up with local stone? Who is making these decisions???? Not the people who pay the taxes! And the plan to make School street one-way with parallel parking will remove 1/2 of the parking for local businesses! The business owners can’t be behind this. Not to mention the idea of taking out the beautiful pistachio trees on School Street that are gorgeous in the fall. Ukiah City Council and Mendo County are you listening?
