MENDOCINO CO., 4/27/25 – Fragility, regret, family and lost dreams are the themes that will be explored in the Mendocino Theatre Company’s production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” opening Friday in Mendocino.
In the semi-autobiographical play, Williams tells the story of the Wingfield family and their daily life following the Great Depression. Characters include Amanda, the Southern belle mother with an addictive and romantic personality disorder; the traumatized and anxious daughter Laura; and Tom, the son who thrives on escapism and a longing to leave his home behind, the latter a representation of the playwright.
Amanda, played by Felicia Freitas, laments how much she misses the glory of her youth and the good old days, while trying to prepare her children for adulthood and independence.
Daughter Laura’s shyness holds her back, but she finds pleasure in her zoo of glass animals. A disability and lack of boyfriends doesn’t help her self-esteem. Her family seeks to change that, which launches the play’s plotline. She is played by Carolyn Gondek with Jimmy Lilly as a possible suitor named Jim.

In contrast is Tom, as played by Vincent Keene, who seeks to explore the world as a seaman while trying to balance family obligations and the unresolved grief he has for his father, who abandoned the family over a decade prior.
The play is directed by veteran actor and director John Craven.
“’The Glass Menagerie’ is a seminal work of American theatre, renowned for its themes of family dynamics, personal ambition, and the next generation’s struggle to invent the future,” the company said. “[The play] continues to resonate with audiences today, offering a unique and thought-provoking perspective on family relationships and the human condition.”
The Mendocino Theatre Company’s performance of “The Glass Menagerie” runs May 1-June 1 at the Helen Schoeni Theatre, 45200 Little Lake St., Mendocino. Tickets are $33.50 for adults and $21.25 for youth aged 24 and under. More information and tickets are available at https://mendocinotheatre.org.
