MENDOCINO CO., 6/15/26 — Cal Fire has suspended residential outdoor burn permits for Mendocino County effective Monday morning, the fire agency said.

Burn permits were suspended due to warming temperatures and winds drying out grass. The high volume of dead grass and hotter, drier conditions increase fire danger, Cal Fire said.

Cal Fire said though the permit suspension prevents homeowners from burning landscape debris, this is a good time to prepare for potential wildfires by maintaining a minimum of 100 feet of defensible space around homes and buildings.

The fire agency recommends clearing all dead and dying vegetation 100 feet from all structures, and landscaping with fire-resistant plants and non-flammable groundcover. Suggested alternate ways of disposing of landscape debris include using a woodchipper or hauling to a green waste facility, according to Cal Fire.

The residential burn permit suspension does not apply to permitted campfires within organized campgrounds or on private property. A campfire permit can be obtained at local fire stations or at PreventWildfireCA.org.
