UKIAH, CA., 5/20/26 — The city of Ukiah announced Wednesday that it will hold a virtual workshop next week about a proposed improvement project on North State Street.

The city said the proposed project between Norton Street and Low Gap Road will focus on “improving safety, accessibility and infrastructure along one of Ukiah’s busiest transportation corridors.”

The project would include:

  • Repair and reconstruction of deteriorated roadway sections
  • Replacement of aging water and sewer utilities beneath the roadway
  • Sidewalk repair and Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility improvements
  • Safer pedestrian crossings and traffic calming measures
  • Bicycle lane improvements
  • Street trees, landscaping, and corridor beautification

The proposed section of North State Street is the last remaining concrete segment of the former U.S. Highway 101 segment that went through Ukiah. The city said that portion of road has long presented challenges for those who use it.

The city said it is seeking feedback from the community to help refine the project’s priorities and strengthen implementation.

This is the city’s second try at getting this project off the ground, city of Ukiah Deputy Manager Shannon Riley said. In 2024, the city applied for a grant through the Caltrans Active Transportation Program, which was created to bolster active modes of transportation in the state, but didn’t get it. Now, they are trying again for the same grant, and that application is due in June, Riley said.

The workshop will be virtual on Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m. and will last an hour. Community members, businesses, property owners and North State Street corridor users are invited to attend. Participants will be able to ask questions and provide input on current conditions and future improvements in addition to learning about the project.
